2021 AIESEP Young Scholars (4): Mats Hordvik

Mats Hordvik is an Associate Professor in Physical Education and Teacher Education at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences. He submitted his PhD in 2018 under the supervision of Ann MacPhail and Lars Tore Ronglan. Mats’ thesis was titled “Developing as a teacher educator: Using self-study of teacher education practices as a pedagogy for professional development”. During his PhD, Mats worked closely with Dr. Deborah Tannehill which acted as his critical friend. It was Dr. Tannehill that nominated Mats for the young scholar award. At the AIESEP Scientific Conference 2021 he will present his research on models-based practice in two presentations: (i) “A Bildung Theoretical Underpinning of Models-based Practice in Physical Education” and (ii) “A Longitudinal Mixed Methods Study of Using a Models-Based Approach to Teach Physical Education in Norway”. “My current research interests revolve around teaching, learning, and development in varied professional contexts (i.e., physical education, teacher education, youth sport, higher education). By aligning research-teaching-learning-development, my overarching aim is to produce practices that place equity and social justice as the cornerstone. In working towards achieving this aim, I am currently involved in multiple collaborative national and international research projects with different stakeholders (i.e., students, teachers, coaches, children, parents, policymakers).”
