The Department of Kinesiology and Health at Georgia State University invites applications for the position of Department Chair and Full Professor starting July 2019. Candidates must have an earned doctorate in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Exercise Psychology, Health and Physical Education, Sport Administration or other closely related field. The Department of Kinesiology and Health is located in the College of Education and Human Development and is home to one of the most popular majors at Georgia State University. The Kinesiology and Health department serves over 1000 graduate and undergraduate students annually, with a reputation for excellent teaching with a diverse student body. Twenty-two tenured, tenure-track faculty and clinical faculty members in the department contribute to Georgia State University’s top 10 rankings in both the most innovative university and best undergraduate teaching in the U.S by the U.S. News and World Reports in 2017. Faculty have a history of external funding from the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of State, and various private agencies and organizations, and collaborate with the Neuroscience Institute, Physical Therapy, Public Health, Nutrition, Communication, and Robinson College of Business departments, as well as the Urban Studies Institute at Georgia State University. The department supports state-of-the-art research and teaching laboratories in biomechanics, applied physiology, muscle biology, cardiovascular physiology, sport business, and physical education pedagogy, as well as Centers in Movement & Rehabilitation Research, and Sport and Urban Policy.
Qualifications: The successful candidate will lead and enhance the research, education, and service mission through effective communication and collaboration. Preference will be given to candidates currently at the rank of Professor. Tenure may be granted for qualified candidates. Candidates should have a demonstrated record in academic leadership and management, including experience in budgeting and resource allocation, academic program assessment, as well as hiring, developing, and supervising faculty and staff. A record of excellence in scholarship and extramural research funding, teaching, and experience with interdisciplinary research is also recommended.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to:
• Report to the Dean of the College of Education and Human Development
• Represent and advocate for the interests of students, faculty, and staff to the Dean, the University, and communities of interest
• Advance core values of trust, fairness/equity, and accountability, as well as shared departmental commitment to equity, access, success and diversity
• Manage and allocate department budget and resources
• Oversee the growth of the departmental external funding portfolio
• Supervise academic program review
• Oversee the quality of instruction, credit hour production and class assignment
• Evaluate faculty for annual reports and promotion and tenure
• Oversee faculty hiring and development
• Engage in strategic planning for the department and college
